Kastoria Summer School Participant 2016
Greek Canadian girl born in Kastoria, Greece or else the “Fur City”. My family has been in the Fur Industry for four generations (since 1920).
It all started when I watched my furrier father cutting pieces of the mink pelts, my only concern was how to fully reclaim them and with a bit of creativity turn them into something remarkable. Ever since I can remember myself till now I am turning this amazing garment (Fur) into Accessories and anything else the imagination can reach!
My interest in Fur doesn’t stop there, during my studies on Animal Science at the Animal Production department of the Alexandrian Technological Institute of Thessaloniki, I had the chance to conduct a survey for my thesis (Mink Nutrition) and another scientific research ( 2014) with the help of a professor of mine which was entitled “Sperm Chromatin Structure (SCS) of the Mink”. The best lesson I learned was the importance of all the factors (nutrition, environment, health, welfare etc.) that are important into getting the best quality in Mink Production.
Alongside of my scientific training, my dream is to further grow my knowledge as a furrier. Currently besides launching my own brand, I am receiving knowledge by working at the North American Fur Auctions House ( NAFA) in Toronto where I am being trained on the quality sorting of the skins (grading).
As for my inspiration I would like to give the honor to my father Panagiotis Lianas, to whom I owe this excitement about the Fur industry to. In my eyes, from farming to retail, the fur industry is historic tale with its roots back into the past where real trade started. A journey with many destinations with the only ticket of knowledge (farming, trapping, pelt sorting, fur auctions, skin dealing, designing, creating and sewing, marketing and financing and so it goes). With this knowledge I will one day be able to proudly say “I’m a Furrier”.
