Our bursary program has seen applications come from all sectors for an array of opportunities. The REMIX Design Competition is a prime example of how we want to help support the new generation in opportunities. Angel Tran is a designer whose pieces were chosen by Vogue Talents to partake in the 2018 REMIX event in Milan last February.
To ensure his garments were completed, Angel applied for a bursary where we were more than happy to oblige to. Below is Angel’s story on creating his three looks and his experience at REMIX.
Last February I had a chance to show my mini collection for REMIX contest during Milan fashion week which was sponsored by International Fur Federation and Vogue Talents. From the making to the final show, It was a great experiences, I enjoyed every minute of it. I have learned a lot from the trip as well as from other designers. For me, I got to do what I love, what I believe in and stand for is beyond graceful.
I would like to thank the IFF team for all the help and support. I couldn’t have made it without them. It was their bursary that helped me rent an atelier to work on my collection for 2 weeks.
In this mini collection, I was inspired by the street artist Space Invader and the Space Invaders of Versailles. Space Invader is a street artist that I like who is famous for his mosaic art in every corner of the world. Ever since I started playing his game Flash Invaders (where you can flash his artworks where you find them on the street) I have had many opportunities to explore the city in which I live. This has also inspired me to travel to a variety of other cities and discover cool places. It is a great way to have fun while being out in nature. I thought to myself why not create a collection inspired by all the invaders that I have found. And of course, my first choice is using my favourite material: fur. It is after-all, the most natural material I could use. This is my idea of using a natural material in a modern setting and having them side by side, “from nature to nature”.
I used mainly Orylag fur in this collection as the Orylag’s fur is exceptionally soft and varies in colours. Its hide is supple and strong at the same time. Its natural tanning, environmentally conscious, allows for a variety of finishing. This is the result of quality breeding achieved by respecting animals throughout their lives, while taking things slow. Also added some effect on left over fur from fox belly so there’s absolutely no waste of material during the making of the collection.
One of Invader’s latest works is “the invasion in Versailles” and I really enjoyed my trip back to the garden of Versailles as well as discovering the city and nature of Versailles while flashing all of the new works of art. I found a way to put them together for this collection, while adding my own personal touch and interpretation. I have mixed the royal touch with the street art to create a modern look for a strong, independent women, glamorous yet functional with sex appeal, provocation and power. I want the wearer to express her personality through the garment. They are the MODERN QUEENS.
I was glad I could join the new generation of designers who stand for real fur and use our voices to build a bigger, better future for fur in the fashion industry. THANK YOU, REMIX!
