“Discovery consists of looking at the same thing as everyone else and thinking something different.”
– Albert Szent- Gyorgy
Not that long ago, the Fur Guru heard of this man: a designer that finds inspiration in the ordinary life and with it, re-invents the world around him and creates a much better place to be. He relies on human introspection, heritage, simplicity, nature, peace and enjoyment. All this without forgetting the purpose of fashion: understand what people really need. His name? Wang Yutao.
This lover of the quotidian is a treasured name in his homeland, a finalist of the Chinese round of the International Woolmark Prize and a proud archetypal of the latest Chinese fashion trends. His main ambition is to challenge the global perception of Chinese fashion design and to prove that, whatever we thought we might have known about Chinese fashion, we were probably in large partly wrong. In the process, he plays with the masculine-feminine dialogue, he overlays colours and patterns, embosses and simplifies shapes.
Lately, he has been working with one of this Guru’s most cherished materials: Swakara. He has joined forces with Kopenhagen Fur to continue his path towards making the ordinary opulent and the average… well, dreamlike. He has been hitting the catwalk in previous years with different furs sourced by this auction house but, his interest in Swakara made the Guru ponder: what made this resourceful mind turn his eyes towards this particular type of fur? Why is this specific material providing him with more creativeness to celebrate the beauty of the usual, daily life? He gave her a hint in his interview for Kopenhagen Fur News. The designer mentions: “Swakara is a beautiful skin type. They are each unique. This presents some very interesting challenges when working with Swakara”.

But you know the Guru; she never (ever!) has enough. So she decided to contact him directly and make some of her meddlesome questions to Mr. Wang. He was generous enough to take time of his very busy schedule and answer them. Through his responses he guides us towards all those little reminders of how wonderful life is. Wang Yutao is one of those people that revitalize your acuity towards the good, stunning and unrepeatable little moments. His work is like looking at life through a colourful kaleidoscope and making you think of it in a different, more buoyant way.
For the gloomy ones, for the people that have lost and for those trying to escape from dullness in life, here is your medicine. The Guru has it and it is called Wang Yutao. It’s not only about his gorgeous work but the philosophy behind it, what it contains and celebrates: the simple things that make all of us blissful.
P.S. This was just a spoonful of the medicine, next week get ready for the whole treatment. The Guru promises immediate recovery and instant joy de vivre my darlings!
